Everyone has fought or is fighting a battle for which we know nothing about. Not unless we take the time to get to know them and hear their story. Yet, many out there will use various platforms to judge, slander and criticize in a negative hurtful way. But when the table is turned, the one who slanders is suddenly offended and wants some sort of retroactive justice.
I remember standing at this spot overlooking the lake and taking in the sun on a rare warm winter day. I had recently received an email from someone who told me how much they appreciate what I share and how I encouraged them to get outside and start hiking. They also shared their story of struggle and obstacles and how hiking and getting outside has changed old habits and has made them a better a person.
On this same day I also came across a message posted publicly that slandered HBF Outdoors in a some what subtle but hidden tone. Backlash for a leadership decision I had to make. (Note: as a leader not all decisions are easy no matter how right they are) While this message didn’t receive any attention from the community. the fact is I saw it and I was angry. Truth is, I pondered on it so much it changed my mood and attitude for the day. Why did I allow some silly digital message impact my mood and day? Maybe I simply did not like my integrity being questioned. Whatever it was the simple truth is, there was no need to allow a 140 character message that would get lost in a timeline and algorithms to change my mood.
So why am I telling you this story? Because, for every one negative nagger who feels their digital platform will give them some sense of satisfaction, there are ten others who will, at some point, thank you for your efforts and difference you made in their lives no matter how small or big.
I stood by that lake, sun in my face, with a smile of humility as the email from an inspired new hiker shined brighter than the gray cloud of negativity and slander from one lone keyboard cowboy.
Within weeks HBF Outdoors officially became an LLC with its main purpose being to connect people to others, learn new outdoor skills, and explore Pennsylvania forests. But it’s the connect aspect of what we are doing that matters the most. We’re not concerned with anyone’s skill level or what brand of gear they choose to carry. What matters most is WHO you are and how can HBF Outdoors LLC. inspire, encourage, and equip you to enjoy the outdoors in simplicity all while connecting with others.
We want to connect with you and others offline. Off the digital world and in person in the outdoors.
Connecting in person people become real. You can learn about someone’s occupation from their Facebook profile or even access their knowledge through online community participation. However, you don’t truly know someone’s tone, sense of humor, or demeanor until you meet in person.
Connecting in person and in the outdoors builds deeper connections…
When we confine our conversations to the online world, we often forget that we are interacting with a full human being, with many layers and facets.
Connecting in person and in the outdoors develops more Tolerance and Respect…
Of course, there are the nice members of your community, but sometimes negative behavior exists. When we’ve connected offline and an issue arises, we remember there was a real person on the other side, not just a phantom behind the screen.
This is why I’ve created HBF Outdoors, LLC. To give people a place to connect in person while enjoying the outdoors. No matter your skill level, come out to one of our many events and connect with a community who shares your love for the outdoors. And who knows, you may just end up impacting someone’s life for the better.
