Don’t Become the Hunted…Be Seen!

Fall is my favorite time of year to hike. It’s not just the color of the leaves changing but the cooler crisp air and the smell of wood burning stoves in the distance. But while fall has a lot to offer for hikers and backpackers we need to be careful as it’s also the beginning of hunting season. Around here bow season has started.

If you plan on doing any hiking this fall season in Pennsylvania be sure to educate yourself on hunting, areas that are hunted the most and ALWAYS wear blaze orange.

Below are some basic tips for hikers from the Pennsylvania DCNR

For complete information on hunting and trapping in Pennsylvania, visit the PA Game Commission Web site.

For more information on hunting visit the DCNR hunting page.

Enjoy the outdoors and remember these important rules:

  • Know and obey the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks.
  • Know the boundaries of hunting areas and safety zones.
  • All hunters must have a current Pennsylvania hunting license.
  • Hunting woodchucks is prohibited.
  • Dog training is permitted from the day after Labor Day to March 31.
  • Use extreme caution with firearms at all times.
  • Contact the park office for accessible hunting information.
  • Remember, non-hunters may be in hunting areas.
  • Firearms and archery equipment used for hunting may be uncased and ready for use only in authorized hunting areas during hunting seasons. In areas not open to hunting or during non-hunting seasons, firearms and archery equipment shall be kept in the owner’s car, trailer or leased campsite. The only exception is that law enforcement officers and individuals with a valid Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms may carry said firearm concealed on their person while they are within the park.
