My name is Tyler Dixon and I’ve been nominated for HikeByFaith’s #hikeroftheweek.
I developed a love for the outdoors at an early age through family camping trips each summer and the Boys Scouts program. Since then I’ve had the privilege of teaching in an outdoor-specific program, which only served to increase my passion for being outside and allowed me to witness the therapeutic benefits of time spent in nature firsthand.
The Canadian Rocky Mountains are my backyard and I spend as much time as possible there; hiking, mountain biking, camping, paddling, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and so on! I wanted an outlet to share my outdoor exploits, so I started a blog (Get Me Outdoors) to showcase the different adventures I was taking. My blog has steadily grown over the past few years, thanks largely to social media. An increased online presence has provided unique opportunities to be an ambassador for various companies and organizations, such as Alberta Parks, Campstake, and Dark Energy.
In addition to being an ambassador I also volunteer with some outdoor-related organizations. I am the Outdoor Editor for the Calgary Guardian and I am tasked with sharing interesting stories that make Calgary’s enormous backyard an outdoor enthusiast’s dreamland. I am also a Team Member with GOT (Get Out To) Parks, an initiative aimed at reconnecting youth with Canada’s national, provincial, and territorial parks. Lastly, I am the Social Media Director for the Global, Environmental, and Outdoor Education Council (GEOEC), a sub-committee of the Alberta Teacher’s Association.
Out of all the outdoor activities I take part in hiking is one of my absolute favourites. It’s pretty amazing that your feet can take you to all these magical places and all you need is the willpower to do it. I love exploring new trails, new parks, and hidden gems in the Rockies and am constantly on the lookout for the next big adventured. If you’d like to connect or read about my latest adventures you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. I would just like to thank those that nominated me for Hiker of the Week, it’s very much appreciated!
