Hiker of the Week: Todd Nystrom aka @Todd_the_Hiker

IMG_6058I am a hiker, backpacker, camper, and outdoor photographer from Morrow, Ohio, on the outskirts of Cincinnati.  I acquired my love of the outdoors at an early age, learning to hunt and fish with dad, and taking numerous family camping trips in the remote backwoods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  It was a great blessing having parents who taught us about the outdoors, and living in an environment where I could spend my summers outdoors exploring the endless woods behind the military base where we lived, hiking miles to small remote lakes, fishing with a buddy, and developing a love of the outdoors that has never faded.

These days, my wife and I frequently take day and weekend hiking or backpacking trips to the many great parks and forests around Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.  We’ll even head out in the evening after work to one of our nearby state parks to get in a few quick miles on the trail and grill out dinner.  Our favorite destination, though, because of both its beauty and proximity to home, is the Red River Gorge Geological Area in Kentucky, which is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest.  We make frequent trips down there for day hikes as well as backpacking trips and have yet to explore all the trails this amazing place has to offer…someday perhaps!

We have also hiked a number of US national parks including Yosemite, Shenandoah, Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Big Bend, and Arches, and just last year we experienced our first national park backpacking adventure in Canyonlands.  Of course we were destined to be a hiking couple when spent our honeymoon in the Canadian Rockies exploring a couple of their great national parks, Banff and Yoho.

I am a strong advocate for getting others outdoors.  Several years ago I started a hiking ministry in my church and have lead many outings with groups large and small, and of all ages, on a wide variety of hikes from easy to difficult.  Leading groups into the outdoors motivated me to take formal training in wilderness first aid and wilderness survival skills, which I now pass on to the younger generation, spending a week each summer teaching children outdoor safety and adventure skills at our church youth summer camp.

Getting outdoors to enjoy the incredible beauty of God’s amazing creation is what I thrive on, and being able to share that joy with others is priceless!
