In 21 days I begin my thruhike of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT), and the excitement is setting in more each day.
In a recent Facebook thread I was asked “why” I am thru-hiking the LHHT. The short answer is because it’s there and I can, however, I doubt that was the response they were looking for.
Personal – The first I’m thruhiking the LHHT is for personal accomplishment. I’ve hiked sections of the trail, but have not hiked the trail in its entirety in the same trip.
Life has been busy for us around the Early Bird Homestead (our home). Since moving into our new home we tackled several large projects to get ready for chickens, goats and gardening. All this took place during our winter season. So getting out on the LHHT for a solo thruhike is about recharging and refreshing, and time alone on a trail away from daily routine and the comforts of life has a way of connecting my mind and spirit to what matters.
#Giveback – We’ve partnered with Gear Forward to equip the next generation for the outdoors. At the end of my thruhike on April 30th around 3:00 p.m. we will be stationed in the parking lot, across from the Falls City Pub and the Ohiopyle LHHT trailhead collecting used and/or unwanted camping, hiking and backpacking gear. This gear will then be shipped to our friends at Gear Forward.
Gear Forward, simply is about providing the next generation of stewards, adventurers, Scoutmasters and Girl Scout Leaders the resources they need to get outdoors. No child should be denied access to all the outdoors has to offer because they don’t have the necessary equipment. Check outwww.gearforward.org for details on how you can donate.
If you have gear to donate we’d love to see you on Saturday the 30th at the Ohiopyle trailhead. Then join us at the Falls City Pub for great food and drink! And meet the HikeByFaith Team.
While there, feel free to stop in at Wilderness Voyageurs and check out the awesome whitewater rafting adventures they have to offer.
